Gerard Butler was confirmed to star in the film on February 23, 2011.[3] On May 7, 2011 a casting call was held for extras to appear in the film. Filming began during the week of April 5, 2011.
On July 16, 2012, FilmDistrict changed the title from Playing the Field to Playing for Keeps.

Reception

Critical reception for the movie has been overwhelmingly negative, with the film holding a 4% "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes based upon 82 reviews. The site's consensus states: "Witless, unfocused and arguably misogynistic, Playing for Keeps is a dispiriting, lowest-common-denominator Hollywood rom-com. It was placed last of sixteen films for December 2012. At Metacritic it has a rating of 27% based on 25 reviews, indicating generally unfavorable reviews.

The French production company Studio 37 initially searched for an American co-producer, and received positive response from Hollywood representatives who read the screenplay. However, because of cultural differences, they decided to look for European partners instead, as they thought it would be essential for the project to be driven primarily by its director. The film was eventually produced by Studio 37, Onyx Films and the Montreal-based company Transfilm, for a budget of $50 million.

Variety reported from the Cannes Film Market in 2009 that Kirsten Dunst and Emile Hirsch were in talks to play the film's two leading roles. A few months later the same magazine reported that Jim Sturgess had been cast instead of Hirsch.

Principal photography started in Montreal in February 2010.[1] Filming and post-production were located to Canada because of the country's low taxes for film productions. Producer Dimitri Rassam said: "We couldn't have made Upside Down without the French funding system but there was no way we could have shot [in France] because the tax rebate is not attractive enough.

Production

Filming took place throughout early 2012; scenes depicting Neeson and Grace's characters in Los Angeles were shot in January.

Istanbul scenes were shot in November 2011.

Some scenes were filmed in the new film studios of the Cité du Cinéma founded by Luc Besson in Saint-Denis in France.
Release

Taken 2 was screened on 7 September 2012 at the 38th Deauville American Film Festival.[10] It was theatrically released in more than 25 international markets, including North America, on 5 October 2012.
